The Third World Water Forum

An estimated 8,000 people from all over the world gathered in Kyoto March 16-22 for the 3rd World Water Forum. This forum was dominated by a corporate-controlled agenda that supports public-private partnerships as the wave of the future. Privatization is emerging as the "solution" to global water scarcity and is being pushed by multinational corporations that stand to profit from this precious resource.

But an expanding network of groups and individuals around the world are demanding that water be considered a human right, not a profit-generating commodity. At the forum, representatives from public interest, human rights, and consumer advocacy organizations effectively split the World Water Council "consensus" on a corporate model of water governance and worked to promote a new democracy model of water governance. These representatives came together as the "Water is Life" coalition.
