The African Union (AU) was launched on 9 July 2002 at a conference in Durban, South Africa. It succeeds the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), established by the Sirte Declaration of 1999, which proclaimed to rid the continent of the remaining vestiges of colonization and apartheid; to promote unity and solidarity among African States; to coordinate and intensify cooperation for development; to safeguard the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Member States and to promote international cooperation within the framework of the United Nations.

ECOWAS  Popular
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is a regional organization of 15 West African nations formed in 1975. There were 16 nations in the group until recently, when Mauritania withdrew its membership.

Forum for African Investigative Reporters (FAIR)  Popular
FAIR is a professional association of investigative journalists in Africa. Its mission is to enhance, deepen and build investigative journalism as a profession throughout the continent. FAIR was established in May 2003 by 15 investigative journalists from six African countries to help and support eachother in order to overcome common obstacles, ranging from lack of encouragement and low pay to life-threatening situations.

NEPAD  Popular
NEPADNew Partnership for African Development (NEPAD) arose from a mandate given to the five initiating Heads of State (Algeria, Egypt, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa) by the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) to develop an integrated socio-economic development framework for Africa. The 37th Summit of the OAU in July 2001 formally adopted the strategic framework document.
