With globalization, social and economic insecurity have been increasing. Existing systems of social protection become more and more dysfunctional. In this ASC seminar the socio-economic security performance of African countries is being compared to that of other parts of the world.
Globalization has increased social and economic insecurity in all parts of the world. But what policy options for enhancing economic security do African countries have as a sufficient answer to ongoing globalization? In this presentation, particular forms of insecurity experienced in African countries will be highlighted through examining the impact of “Washington Consensus policies” and informalization of economic activities.
Dr Guy Standing, Director of the Socio-Economic Security Programme at the International Labour Organisation, will draw from a global database developed to monitor the trends in seven forms of socio-economic security.
Dr. John Sender, ASC Leiden/SOAS London will act as referent.
