In the early 90s social scientists considered the social movents virtually “dead”. When social movement re-appeared with the anti-globalism, social sciences devoted serious research attention to the movement. Amsab-Institute of Social History brings some of these researchers together.
There simply seemed to be no social movements anymore in the early 90s. If there were, they were so splintered and fragmented that they had virtually no political impact. Individualism and egoism seemed to have taken over the entire political realm. This however turned out to be a mistake when in 1999 protest actions were organized against the meeting of the World Trade Organisation in Seattle.
'Anti-globalism' is a fairly recent phenomenon. When speaking of 'anti-globalism' a number of social organisations and activities are designated, resisting to worldwide processes of (usually) neo-liberal economical signature, and social, cultural and ecological effects on the lives of a large part of the world population.
In the International Colloquium Anti-globalism, Amsab-Institute of Social History will bring together a number of researchers who will survey the research on the anti-globalist movement. Central theme of the colloquium will be the position of the anti-globalism-movement towards the 'global governance authorities', like the United Nations Organisation on the one hand and WTO, IMF and G8 on the other.
Registration necessary before the 1st of September.
