| Are media a luxury or is access to information a fundamental right? A debate with Wilf Mbanga (publisher), Nixon Mao Nyakidzino (former student leader and journalist) and Shorai Kariwa (radio journalist).
Organised by Free Voice, this debate seeks to address the purpose of media support as a tool of development cooperation. What are the consequences for a society if people don’t have access to objective local and mass media? There will be special attention for the situation in Zimbabwe and what role the local media played in the parliamentary elections of March 31, 2005.
Wilf Mbanga is a journalist who had to leave Zimbabwe after writing critical articles about the Mugabe government. After living in the Netherlands for a year he moved to London, where he now publishes the indpendent newspaper “The Zimbabwean”. Mbanga will speak about his experiences as a journalist in Zimbabwe. Also two Zimbabwean radio journalists, who currently attend RNTC trainings in the Netherlands, will be participating in the debate. Former student leader Mao Nyakidzino worked in the past for the national broadcaster Zimbabwean Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) and now works as an independent journalist and social worker. Shorai Kariwa works for radio Voice of the People where he experienced the difficulties to work as an independent journalist; he survived three attacks on his life.
