Lecture on Ethnic Inequality

Agenda | 10 February 2005

Lecture by Anthony Heath, Professor of Sociology at the University of Oxford. The lecture will report initial results from a cross-national study of ethnic minority disadvantage in labour markets, including Britain, Germany, Netherlands, Austria, Sweden, the USA and Canada.

The focus of the study is on the experience of the ‘second generation’ who were born or received all their education in the country of destination. Whereas the first generation will often be handicapped by lack of fluency in the language of the destination country, by lack of social capital or of relevant human capital, the members of the second generation might be expected to compete on much more equal terms with members of the destination country.

Initial results suggest that the second generation fare a great deal better than the first, both with respect to unemployment and with respect to occupational advance. However there are rather different patterns at work in North America and in Europe, with some European countries continuing to show major disadvantages for ethnic minorities in gaining access to professional and managerial occupations.

Venue: Room 123 of the Ruppert Gebouw, De Uithof, Utrecht, from 15:00 to 17:00.
