Conference ‘Ten Years of Southern Africa’s Quest for Democratisation and Political Governance’, November 23 - 25, 2003
The Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (IMD), in partnership with the Institute for Democracy in South Africa (IDASA) and the South African Centre for Policy Studies (CPS) will convene a conference in November 2003 to consider the state of democratisation and political governance in the region.
Issues under consideration will include the following:
• Have the promised ‘democratic dividends’ been realised in the region?
• What lessons can we learn from liberation-movements-turned-governing-parties in the region?
• What is the relationship between democratisation and economic development in the region?
• How do social justice issues - such as land ownership, poverty and underdevelopment, influence democratisation and political governance in the region?
• What is the state of the gender relations of power in southern Africa?
• What lessons can we learn from transitional processes in the region over the past decade?
The conference will bring together practitioners such as politicians, government officials, and parliamentarians, scholars, researchers and activists. The aim is to promote greater inter-regional dialogue and understanding, and make a modest contribution to the policy debates on democratisation and political governance in southern Africa.
The conference will bring together some 90 participants, with the overwhelming majority coming from southern African states. The conference will be held near Johannesburg.
